Ultra-RVC (Reactive Vibration Control) premium rifle bedding compound improves accuracy by reacting to vibration energy pulses and annular energy waves reducing their ability to cause accuracy-destroying muzzle movement. Ultra-RVC is a technologically advanced reactive elastomer specifically formulated for the unique conditions found in firearm applications. Unlike the simple solid, hard-setting or otherwise “passive” (unresponsive) products, Ultra-RVC actively responds to help absorb and eliminate muzzle movement caused by energy pulses and waves. Ultra-RVC mixes to a high viscosity gel that will cling to vertical surfaces in its un-cured state and cures translucent with appearance similar to that of satin varnish or polyurethane and the cured consistency of Ultra-RVC can be varied with the mixture ratio. Ultra-RVC has an extended pot-life to ensure you will not be rushed when using this product.
The initial vibration energy is induced when the sear disengages allowing movement of the hammer/firing pin and additional vibration energy is created with every subsequent action such as hammer impact of the firing pin, firing pin impact of the primer, primer ignition and so forth until the bullet exits the muzzle. Each individual action creates a different series of vibration pulses and since the barrel is tightly attached to the receiver, vibrations see the assembly as a single unit transferring the pulses between the two without interruption. Because the receiver has a larger and more complex physical size and shape, the vibration pulses concentrate in the symmetrical shaped barrel traveling from the receiver to the muzzle and back again until they eventually expend all their energy. While each vibration pulse and annular energy wave starts at a different point in time, all the pulses and waves traverse the barrel where they combine and/or ride on top of each other increasing the amount of movement at the muzzle. Annular energy waves are created by the rapid pressure increase resulting from the primer ignition and powder burn being held back by the neck tension and/ or crimp, additional annular energy waves are created as the bullet proceeds down the bore.
The most simple explanation of how Ultra-RVC works is to drop a coin onto a hard surface like a bare table or counter top – when the coin strikes the hard surface, the impact energy is reflected back into the coin causing the coin to continue bouncing and vibrating until all the energy is expended and it eventually comes to rest. If you then drop the coin onto a soft surface like a folded towel, it will not bounce or vibrate because the energy is being absorbed as a passive function of the soft material. Ultra-RVC is much more complex in its function as it not only absorbs energy but also actively counters the movement that results from the initial energy release.
Vibration and annular waves cause a gun barrel to flex or move in a sine wave fashion in relation to the nominal static axis of the bore - when the applied force causes one point of the barrel to move in a downward direction, the points to either side of the applied force will attempt to move upward in response to the initial movement. “For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction” resulting in the sine wave effect, the neutral points or zero-center of the sine wave are commonly referred to as “harmonic nodes” – the “peaks” or points of maximum movement fall between the nodes. Harmonic nodes change location with every round fired for several reasons: Slight pressure changes from round to round; affects of ambient atmospheric conditions on both the ammunition and barrel; changes in the barrel’s response to each round caused by un-even heating/cooling at various points over the entire length of the barrel. Normal load “building” or “tuning” (finding the sweet-spot) is an attempt to time the bullet so it exits the bore when the muzzle is in ‘roughly’ the same position and at the same angle to the nominal static bore axis each time but it does not reduce the amount of movement or vibration that is induced into the barrel. Ultra-RVC absorbs energy so that it is not reflected back into the barrel and actively counters the sine wave effect greatly reducing both the amount of position change and angle of the muzzle. Because Ultra-RVC is “reactive” it adapts and responds to variations of the ammunition and their resultant effects on the barrel independently for each round fired.
Application:
Ultra-RVC is a professional-use product and should only be used by competent gunsmiths who are experienced in gun barrel bedding practices. Specific application instructions for Ultra-RVC in addition to all standard barrel bedding practices are as follows:
User is responsible for testing compatibility of their release agent prior to starting the bedding procedure. Normally coating all parts where adhesion is not desired with a quality automotive/furniture wax in addition to a non-stick cooking spray, epoxy release compound and/or other similar material(s) suffice. *Don’t forget to plug any holes/voids as necessary to prevent locking parts into the stock.
Because of the variety of materials, coatings and contaminants used for/on gunstocks, adhesion ability of Ultra-RVC should be tested in a hidden area prior to starting the bedding procedure. Stock surfaces where Ultra-RVC is to be applied should be finished with no finer than 120grit abrasive and be clean and dry - wood moisture content should not exceed 12%. If adhesion is less than ideal and design of the stock allows, application surfaces can be prepared with under-cut mortises so as to allow for mechanical locking of Ultra-RVC to the stock material.
Minimum effective thickness is 0.060” (1.524mm) average 0.080” (2.032mm) however Ultra-RVC may be applied as thick as desired or necessary to fill blemishes … WARNING: Ultra-RVC does NOT provide any structural support, Ultra-RVC is a topical coating only - all structural strength and support must come from the stock itself. If the structural soundness of the stock is questionable, Ultra-RVC should not be applied and the gun should be removed from service until such time as the stock is properly repaired or replaced with one of sufficient structural strength and soundness. Unlike hard-setting compounds, Ultra-RVC is somewhat flexible and the barreled action should be shimmed up slightly from the stock when seating into the un-cured bedding. The desire is to create a slight interference fit so that the barrel and/or entire assembly is in positive but not excessive contact with the cured Ultra-RVC when the shim(s) are removed. Care should be taken as to maintain the normal position orientation of the barreled action to the stock when the shims are in place. WARNING: Improper or excessive shimming of the barreled action can result in unsafe conditions upon final assembly. Ultra-RVC does not shrink when cured thus the shim thickness will determine the amount of interference of the final fit.
Ultra-RVC may be applied continuously throughout the barrel channel or in columns such as when combined with our “Thermo-Control” stock venting procedure. Ultra-RVC has also proven effective when used on guns having a non-continuous stock such as break-actions, rolling/falling blocks and underhammer actions. Non-continuous stock applications are done in much the same manner as with a continuous stock. Ultra-RVC may applied to a suitable thickness over the entire length of the barrel channel or it can be applied in such a manner as to not be readily seen from the outside. Please contact us for information on our Thermo-Control venting procedure or for application design suggestions on non-continuous stocks.
WARNING: Ultra-RVC must NOT used on any action or assembly employing the use of a cross-bolt or other independent solid recoil connection point or the gun can suffer catastrophic failure of the structural support system and or other components! If bedding both the barrel and action, the entire assembly including anchor screws/bolts must be properly isolated from the stock with Ultra-RVC – Please do NOT proceed with bedding an action or a barrel that has a stock attachment point without contacting us for specific instructions on these applications as personal injury and/or catastrophic failure can result!
Ultra-RVC is normally mixed at a 1:1 ratio, however up to 10% more activator (the thicker and slightly tinted component) may be used to increase flexibility of the cured product. Increased flexibility is normally desirable for light profile/thin-wall barrels and low-recoiling applications but since every gun is an individual unto itself, results may vary. It is strongly suggested that all mixture ratio measurements of Ultra-RVC be done by weight to obtain the most consistent accuracy and results.
Mixed Ultra-RVC has an average working pot-life of 3-4 hours depending upon the exact mixture ratio and ambient conditions. Ultra-RVC should be applied and allowed cure in ambient temperatures above 60°F (15.6°C) and ambient relative humidity below 50%. A minimum of 24-30 hours should be allowed curing under normal conditions. Ultra-RVC that has been mixed for less than two hours may be put into a sealed container and stored at or below 0°F (-17.7°C) for several days – allow frozen Ultra-RVC to thaw and warm on its own to ambient temperature before using – ensure that it is not contaminated with moisture/condensation before using. Unmixed Ultra-RVC in sealed in its original container should be stored in a cool, dry place not in direct sunlight.
Low-recoil applications such as rimfires will often see the most benefits from bedding both the barrel and action with Ultra-RVC – as with centerfires, the entire barrel and action assembly must be completely isolated from the stock so please do not attempt this method of bedding without contacting us for specific instructions and warnings concerning action applications.
